WINTER SKIN RESET - Week Six
How to Mask 101
Masking is misunderstood. Masks are treated like a spa indulgence… when in reality, they’re one of the most strategic tools in your skincare routine.
While your daily routine maintains your skin, masks deliver concentrated, targeted care that correct, strengthen, repair, and restore what winter has depleted.
Here's the truth: You cannot over-mask.
To treat or correct a skin concern, use a mask minimum 3 times per week. This gives your skin consistent, concentrated support that creates visible change.
For maintenance—when your skin is healthy and you just want to keep it that way—1-2 times per week is enough.
Winter is the time to mask more, not less. Your skin needs the extra support during these harsh months.
If you're addressing multiple concerns, you can alternate masks. Hydrating mask Monday, nourishing mask Wednesday, brightening mask Friday. Your skin will thank you.
How to Masque: Step-by-Step
1. Start with clean skin
Cleanse thoroughly before masking.
If you're masking in the evening (recommended), this is your regular cleanse. If you're masking during the day, make sure your skin is clean.
2. Apply toner first
This step is often skipped, but it's important. Spritz toner onto damp skin before applying your mask.
Toner preps your skin to absorb the mask more effectively. It also adds an extra layer of hydration that the mask will seal in.
3. Use enough product
Create a thin, visible layer of mask on your face (and neck).
4. Don't forget your decollete
Your (decollete)/ upper chest ages faster than your face and deserves the same care. Many people stop at the jawline. Don't. Extend your mask down your neck and include your upper chest
5. How to use your mask
Rinse-off mask: Follow the product instructions, typically leave on 10-20 minutes. Don't let it completely dry. This can dehydrate your skin.
Overnight mask: These are designed to be left on while you sleep. Apply as your final step, replacing your night cream and rinse off in the morning.
Powder masks: Add water to create a smooth consistency. Apply with your fingers or a fan brush. Leave on 15-30 minutes but in order to keep the mask activated, keep your skin damp, never dry.
Multitask while masking —read, relax or meditate or relax. needs.
6. Remove gently
For rinse-off masks: Use only lukewarm water. Moisten your skin. Saturate and wring out a soft face cloth. Gently remove the mask. Alternately, splash warm water on your face and rinse thoroughly.
For overnight masks: In the morning, dampen skin to remove the mask before continuing with your toner, serum, and moisturizer routine.
Don't scrub or rub aggressively. Your skin should feel soft and nourished, not irritated.
7. Follow with your routine
- Toner
- Serum
- Moisturizer
Best Time to Mask
Whenever works for you!
Consistency is key. Mask when it fits your schedule—just make sure you're doing it regularly.
Evening : Your skin regenerates most actively overnight, so mask before bed to allow it to work with your skin's natural repair process.
Morning: Especially if you're using a Vitamin C brightening mask.
Common Masking Mistakes
Once a month won't create change. Aim for 1-3 times per week depending on your skin's needs.
A thin layer doesn't deliver enough active ingredients. Be generous.
If a rinse-off mask dries completely and starts cracking, it's draws moisture from your skin.
Damp skin penetrates masks better. So always prep with toner.
Your skin's needs change. Rotate masks based on what your skin is asking for.
Masks deliver immediate glow and hydration, but correcting concerns like texture, tone, or sensitivity take time. Be consistent.
Layering Masks
Yes, you can layer masks—it's called multimasking.
Apply different masks to different areas of your face based on what each zone needs:
- Hydrating mask on dry cheeks
- Calming mask on inflamed areas
- Brightening mask on dull forehead or nose
Or layer masks one after another:
- Start with a hydrating mask to drench the skin
- Follow with a nourishing mask to seal and repair
Your skin will absorb what it needs from each and will thank you!
