Vitamin C is an essential nutrient and powerful antioxidant. It's a water-soluble vitamin that supports growth and development and helps your body absorb iron. Because your body doesn't make or store Vit C, it's important to include it in your diet. An orange, a cup of strawberries, chopped red pepper or broccoli provides enough Vit C for the day. 75 mg/day is recommended daily for women, 120mg/day during pregnancy and 90 mg/day for men.
Applying Vitamin C topically is also beneficial in healthy aging. Since only a small percentage of the Vit C we ingest will make it to our skin, supplementing with a topical Vit C serum is important. While skin actives help to elevate your results, it's critical to address inflammation in the skin prior to incorporating any actives (Vitamin C) into your skin care routine. Sensitive, compromised, reactive skin cannot tolerate actives.
Benefits of using Vitamin C for the skin:
1. As a potent antioxidant, Vit C protects skin cells from environmental damage (UV light from the sun and computer, ozone, smoke, and pollution) and accelerated skin aging.
2. Vit C stimulates healthy collagen production and helps prevent collagen breakdown.
Collagen is responsible for maintaining a healthy youthful complexion. After the age of 20, our skin’s ability to replenish collagen decreases by 1-1.5% every year. Vit C helps protect and maintain as well as build collagen.
3. Vit C helps even out pigmentation and dark spots
Vitamin c interrupts the over-production of melanin. When we think of skin brightening and managing hyperpigmentation, we think of Vitamin C.
Types of Vitamin C
The active form is L-ascorbic acid. It is the bioavailable form of vitamin C (the form our skin is able to use).
Other forms of vitamin C must be converted to L-ascorbic acid within the skin before they can work. They can either be an ester form of vitamin C, or a different compound where other components are added to stabilize the ascorbyl group. They will have 'ascorb' in the name.
Vitamin C is known to be an unstable ingredient, and lower quality vitamin C formulas will go off quickly. All of our vitamin C serums contain Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid which help to stabilize the Vitamin C and boost antioxidant power.
Lilfox Haute C Bright Serum Concentrate contains:
-
Tetrahexyldecy Ascorbate the gold standard of Vitamin C. The most potent, stable, and effective deritivative of Vitamin C. The only oil-soluble form of Vitamin C making it able to pass quickly through the epidermis into the dermis where collagen is manufactured; hence making it be the most effective ingredient to boost collagen.
