Everything you need to know about sun protection

A common question that we hear from customers is “which mineral sunscreen is best for me?”. The response is “the one that you will enjoy applying and reapplying”.

Choosing a mineral broad-spectrum SPF involves understanding how mineral sunscreens work, the benefits they offer, and the differences in SPF levels and textures.

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to provide protection. These minerals sit on top of the skin and physically block or scatter UV rays. They are available in cream, balm or powder form

The sunscreen must offer Broad-Spectrum Protection which ensures protection against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.

Mineral sunscreens are less likely to cause irritation, making them suitable for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Let’s clear up the confusion about SPF ratings:
- SPF 15 blocks approximately 93% of UVB rays. It allows for extended sun exposure but is generally recommended for short periods outside or incidental sun exposure.
- SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays. This level is often recommended for daily use, providing more robust protection for typical outdoor activities.
- SPF 40 blocks around 97.5% of UVB rays. It offers slightly better protection than SPF 30 but not dramatically different.
- SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays. It provides the highest level of protection among these options but with only a slight increase over SPF 30 and 40.

Choose the right SPF:
1. For everyday use, such as commuting or running errands, an SPF 30 is generally sufficient.
2. For activities involving prolonged sun exposure like hiking, beach outings, or outdoor sports, an SPF 30 to 50 is recommended.
3. Sensitive or High-Risk Skin: If you have fair skin, are prone to burning, or have a history of skin cancer, opting for SPF 50 is ideal.

Application and Reapplication:
- Mineral sunscreens should be applied generously and evenly to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before sun exposure.
- Reapplication is key!!!! Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating. Even though mineral sunscreens can be water-resistant, they need reapplication after water exposure. Find the SPF that will best suit your lifestyle.

No one want a SPF that leaves a white cast on the skin. At ORESTA, we pride ourselves on curating formulations that are sheer or tinted and leave no white cast.

Mineral sunscreens are often preferred for their lower environmental impact, particularly on coral reefs.

Protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which can lead to sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer during Peak midday Hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)  UV radiation is strongest during these hours. Try to stay indoors or in the shade during this time.

UV radiation increases with altitude, so it's important to be extra cautious in these environments.

Water, Sand, Snow, and Pavement can reflect UV rays, increasing your exposure. Take extra precautions when near these environments.

UV rays can penetrate clouds, so it's important to protect your skin even on cloudy days.

Activities such as skiing, swimming, hiking, and cycling can increase sun exposure, so plan to perform these activities outside peak UV hours if possible.

Some medications (e.g., antibiotics, acne treatments) and cosmetic procedures (e.g., chemical peels, laser treatments) can increase skin sensitivity to UV rays. Seek and follow your healthcare provider's advice on sun exposure during these times.

Don’t fear the sun. Go out and enjoy it but be mindful.
