Applying SPF and being fully protected by SPF are not always the same thing.
How much you apply, where you apply it, and how often you reapply can have a significant impact on how well your skin is protected from UV damage.
Here are six common SPF mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Applying SPF in the Wrong Order
SPF should always be the final step in your skincare routine and applied before makeup.
Applying SPF after cleansing, serums, and moisturizer allows it to form an even protective layer on the skin. Mixing it into moisturizer or applying it over makeup can reduce its effectiveness.
Correct order:
Cleanser → Toner/Hydrosol → Serum → Eye Cream → Moisturizer → SPF → Makeup
2. Not Using Enough
Most people don't apply enough sunscreen to achieve the protection listed on the label.
For your face and neck, aim for approximately ¼ teaspoon (about a dime-sized amount). Apply a generous, even layer and gently press it into the skin for the best coverage.
3. Missing Key Areas
It's easy to focus on the face and forget other areas that are regularly exposed to the sun.
Commonly missed spots include:
- Ears
- Hairline
- Back of the neck
- Décolletage
- Tops of the hands
These areas are just as vulnerable to sun damage and deserve the same daily protection.
4. Forgetting Your Lips
Your lips have very little natural protection from UV rays, making them especially prone to sun damage.
A lip balm with SPF is one of the simplest ways to protect this often-overlooked area. Apply it every morning and reapply throughout the day, especially when spending time outdoors.
5. Not Reapplying
One morning application is NOT enough for all-day protection.
Sunscreens need to be reapplied every two hours when outdoors, and more often if you're swimming, sweating, or spending extended time in direct sun.
For easy touch-ups, keep an SPF stick, powder, or mist in your purse, desk, car, or gym bag.
6. Assuming All SPFs Feel the Same
If you've had a bad experience with SPF in the past, don't give up.
Today's mineral sunscreens are lighter, more comfortable, and more cosmetically elegant than ever before. Whether you prefer a tinted formula, an active-wear option, or something designed for sensitive skin, there is likely an SPF that fits your needs.
The best sunscreen is the one you'll enjoy wearing every day!
