Laryssa and I were in Montreal last weekend. On Saturday morning, we headed to Holt Renfrew - Canada’s iconic high-end fashion retailer. We browsed through the clothing, jewellery, shoes and accessory departments of this highly regarded department store, a place where one would expect customer service to match the high-end price tags. We were on an exciting mission: to spend our gift cards on something special. Unfortunately, our experience was far from what we had anticipated and we left the store empty-handed.

As we wandered through the store, we encountered a disappointing indifference from the staff. Employees, while present, seemed disinterested, offering only cursory glances from their phones with minimal interaction. Our questions were met with brief responses, lacking knowledge or enthusiasm. This standoffish behaviour was experienced throughout the store.

Superior customer service isn't about the grand gestures but in the small, personal touches that show genuine interest and investment in a customer. What a stark contrast to our core values.

What further compounded our dismay was that Holt Renfrew retails a few brands that we also do. Brands which we selected for their quality and appeal yet they were displayed in complete disarray. Products that should have been showcased with care were neglected, testers, meant to invite exploration and appreciation, were rancid. This neglect shows a lack of respect for the brands and speaks volumes about how Holt Renfrew views its partnership with them.
